YuriGagarin50 Chair, Dr Chris Welch and The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) have joined together to deliver a Yuri Gagarin Lecture at the IET, Savoy Place, London, on 12th April from 6pm - 8pm.

The evening lecture celebrates 50 years of manned space flight and will look at the past, present and future plans and possibilities.

The programme for the evening:

Yuri’s Night Competition

Yuri’s Night is pleased to announce that our two recently announced contests, the “Call to Humanity” Space Exploration Advertisement Competition and Yuri’s Night International Space Sweepstakes, are now officially open and accepting entries. $18,000 in space-themed prizes are being offered through these two contests, both of which are completely free to enter.

YuriGagarin50 attended the UK-Russia Year of Space signing in Moscow (full report on next page).

From Moscow to Manchester

YuriGagarin50 also attended the UKSEDs ( Conference. We gained many more supporters and photographed them. Photographs for both these events can be viewed on the YG50 Flickr group.

In other news, the website is constantly being updated and the ‘new and improved look’ events calendar is filling up, please tell us about your events.

JOIN US FOR THE ‘YURI WALK’

YuriGagarin50 would like you to join us for a walk along the Southbank on 12th April 2011, starting at Waterloo bridge at 7am prompt. At 07:07 BST - exactly 50 years on we will be toasting Gagarin’s launch.

The event is to raise awareness of the 50th anniversary. We aim to get the media involved so that the UK wakes up and knows why it is a day worth celebrating!

Gagarin’s Life and Flight Timeline is now online.

This week, YuriGagarin50 was at the International Space University’s Space Station Symposium in Strasbourg (see next page for details).

Next week YuriGagarin50 is off to Moscow for the signing of an agreement between the UK and Russia for a joint ‘Year of Space’ (see next issue for a report) and then at the annual conference of UK Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (UKSEDS) in Manchester for the week-end of 26-27 February. Come and see us if you are in the area!

LITTLE EAGLES

Rona Munro's Little Eagles is a gripping new play charting the space race from the perspective of the Soviet Union. It brings to life the fascinating and little-known story of the brilliant man behind their success, Sergei Korolëv, and of the cosmonauts, his beloved 'little eagles'. Little Eagles will be premiered in Hampstead from 16 April – 7 May 2011.

All at YG50 would like say good luck to our Chair, Dr Chris Welch, who has moved to Strasbourg to work at the International Space University. He may have left the UK but he’s certainly not left YG50. This is just as well, because with the anniversary getting ever closer, the YG50 team are increasingly busy! Recent website updates and new information in the History section:

The Timeline of Yuri Gagarin’s life. Researched and compiled by Vix Southgate, this timeline spans Gagarin’s entire life, from the mundane—his appendix operation and tonsillectomy, to the extraordinary - the flight records from 12 April 1961.

More Memories of Yuri Gagarin have been added as a result of our ‘Appeal for Memories’ in the last issue but we would still like some more!

PROMOTING EVENTS

YuriGagarin50 (YG50) now have more than 20 events listed on http://yurigagarin50.org but we want more! In addition, the British Council will be producing a small publication that will list cultural events linked to Gagarin's Anniversary. The publication will be available at the London Book Fair and other British Council events.
